EV Charger and Robotaxi Charging Installation in Boston, MA

Ross D. Blankenship, Managing Principal of Wins ParkingWritten by , Managing PrincipalUpdated October 2026

Wins Parking plans, permits, builds and runs EV charging for Boston owners, from Back Bay and Seaport garages to fleet yards in Dorchester and near Logan. Eversource's Make Ready program pays for trenching, conduit, wire, meters and any transformer, and Waymo lists Boston as up next. The Department of Energy lists 1,947 public Level 2 and 83 DC fast ports in the city.

The chargers

Which EV chargers suit Boston parking lots?

Only 4% of Boston's public ports are DC fast, 83 of 2,030 in AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026, so Level 2 in garages and lots does nearly all of the city's public charging.

Back Bay and Seaport garages, the Longwood medical area and university housing suit Level 2. Fast charging fits rideshare and delivery near Logan, the Newmarket industrial area and travel stops off I-93 and the Pike.

Our Boston EV charging station installation guide covers the service; this page adds Eversource's program and the city data.

Triple-deckers and brownstones rarely have driveways, which pushes residents toward garages, campus lots and workplace charging. Hospital and university garages in the Longwood Medical Area and office decks in the Seaport see long daily stays, the use Level 2 is built for.

The depot

What does a Boston robotaxi charging depot need?

Waymo lists Boston under "Up next" as of Oct 14, 2026; no driverless service carries riders yet.

Boston's 49.2 inches of snow a year at Logan shape the depot: plowable layouts, covered or structured staging where possible, chargers clear of snow storage, plus fast chargers, cleaning bays, a rider curb and gated entry.

Land is scarce, so garages may suit a fleet better than surface lots. Our guides cover autonomous vehicle parking, future-proof parking design and the EV and AV deployment guide. See also robotaxi depot design in Boston.

The network

How many public EV chargers does Boston have?

Boston has 829 public stations with 1,947 Level 2 and 83 DC fast ports, per AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026.

With only 83 fast ports against 1,947 Level 2, Boston is heavily weighted to slow charging, which suits a city where cars sit in garages for hours.

We refresh this figure monthly in the ports-by-metro research table.

With 829 stations averaging 2.4 ports, Boston's network is many small sites rather than a few hubs. The thin fast-charging count is the clearest gap for a fleet or retail owner.

Cambridge, Brookline and other neighboring towns are separate cities and are not counted in these figures.

The power

Which utility serves Boston chargers, and what does it offer?

Eversource serves Boston, and its EV Charger Make Ready program covers trenching, conduit, wire, meters and any transformer.

The owner still buys the chargers, so the program shifts the infrastructure cost, not the equipment cost. We apply before design is final so the utility work is approved before construction.

Eversource reviews capacity first.

The code

Which permits and codes apply to EV chargers in Boston?

The Inspectional Services Department cites 4–5 weeks for review. NEC Article 625 is the national wiring standard for chargers, and the Access Board publishes the accessibility guidance.

Boston sets minimums by use, and the Transportation Department applies maximum ratios on larger projects, so we check the count before converting stalls.

Historic districts such as Back Bay and Beacon Hill add design review to visible exterior work, so we keep equipment inside garages or out of street view where we can.

Inspectional Services' 4–5 week figure covers review only; Eversource's service work and equipment lead times run on separate clocks.

The incentives

What EV charging incentives are open to Boston sites?

Eversource Make Ready is the main open program; Massachusetts programs are listed on the AFDC state page.

Owners here can no longer plan on 30C; the IRS Instructions for Form 8911 end it for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.

With Make Ready covering the wiring, Boston owners mostly pay for chargers and installation labor.

Eversource's Make Ready support is the main lever in Boston, so we apply before design is final and size the job to the program's rules.

The budget

What does EV charger installation cost in Boston, and how long does it take?

Twelve Boston Level 2 ports run about $52,000 to $117,000 installed and four DC fast ports about $217,000 to $650,000, before Make Ready, by our estimate.

Boston's BEA index of 108.3 is well above the national average, so we scale national per-port costs and AFDC's installation guidance up. Old garages and ledge can add cost.

Once the permit issues, we plan 8–16 weeks for Level 2 on an existing panel and 26–52 weeks for fast charging that needs new service (Wins estimates).

At the BEA index of 108.3, a Level 2 port in Boston runs about $4,333 to $9,750 installed and a fast port about $54,250 to $162,500, by our estimate. Underground garages, ledge and old utility lines under the pavement push jobs toward the top of that range.

Older brick garages may need a structural check before units go on the walls.

A Wins Parking estimate, not a quote: Level 2 at $4,000–$9,000 installed per port (U.S. average), scaled by Boston's BEA cost index of 108.3. Trenching distance, panel and transformer upgrades and utility lead time move it most. The federal 30C credit cannot be claimed for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.

The day to day

How are Boston chargers run day to day?

Each Boston port reports to our operations team, which sets prices, applies idle fees after a short grace period, clears faults and enforces charging stalls, then sends owners a monthly summary.

Salt and snow wear pedestals, so we choose cold-rated units and inspect after winter.

More on how this works: EV charging parking management, and our Boston parking management page.

Logan's normals show 49.2 inches of snow a year and a coldest-month low near 23°F. We mount units above plow height, add bollards and keep cable retractors working so cords stay off the ground. Near the harbor, salt air calls for enclosures rated for it.

The neighbors

How does Boston compare with nearby metros for EV charging?

Boston's 1,947 Level 2 ports far exceed Providence's 190, about 41 miles south, per AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026.

Boston is the only city in the table on Waymo's up-next list.

At about 4%, Boston has the lowest fast-charging share of the 26 metros on this list, per AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026.
