The chargers

What EV chargers does Wins install in Grand Rapids?

Level 2 at 2.9 to 19.2 kW, per the Department of Energy, for cars parked for hours, and DC fast charging up to 500 kW, which adds 100 to 200+ miles in about half an hour.

Medical Mile staff ramps, downtown apartments, hotels near DeVos Place and office parks are Level 2 sites. Fast charging fits retail on 28th Street, stops near the US-131 and I-96 interchange and delivery fleets.

We design, permit, install and run each site, and charging appears in the parking report.

The depot

What would a Grand Rapids robotaxi charging depot need?

Fast chargers sized to fleet miles, a Consumers Energy capacity plan, a queue off the street, heated cleaning bays for winter, a rider curb, gated entry and cameras. As of Oct 14, 2026, no current operator had named Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids has some history here: May Mobility launched an on-demand autonomous shuttle service in the city in 2021. Today the nearest announced robotaxi market is Detroit, about 136 miles east, where Waymo said in November 2025 it is coming. Wins has no robotaxi work in Michigan.

A rebuild can prepare with transformer space, a queue for winter mornings, a heated bay for sensor cleaning and a separate rider curb. Our autonomous vehicle parking, future-proof design and EV and AV deployment guides go into detail.

The network

How many public EV chargers does Grand Rapids have?

121 Level 2 and 52 DC fast ports at 73 public stations with Grand Rapids addresses, per Department of Energy data pulled Oct 14, 2026.

Wyoming and Kentwood, the two big suburbs to the south, list Level 2 ports but no fast ports. Holland, 26 miles west, has 59 Level 2 and 23 fast ports, a lot for its size.

The power

Which utility serves Grand Rapids chargers, and what does it offer?

Consumers Energy serves Grand Rapids. Its PowerMIDrive program offers public Level 2 rebates of up to $7,500 at multifamily properties and up to $5,000 at hospitality sites, and PowerMIFleet supports fleet electrification.

We check current rebate terms and apply before installation where the rules require it. Then we model charging income against Consumers' commercial rate.

Consumers also reviews whether service can handle the load and designs any upgrade, which we request at the start.

The code

Which permits and codes apply to EV charging in Grand Rapids?

An electrical permit through the Development Center, a licensed electrical contractor, wiring to NEC Article 625 and an accessible space per the U.S. Access Board's guidance.

Where Table 5.10.04.C minimums apply, we check the count before converting required stalls; in the TN-CC district there is no minimum to protect. A transformer pad may need site plan review. The city lists no review target, so we budget three to six weeks, an estimate.

The accessible space is drawn first, with level ground, an aisle and reachable controls, and it is cleared first after snow.

The incentives

What EV charging incentives are open to Grand Rapids sites?

Consumers Energy's PowerMIDrive and PowerMIFleet programs, and MDOT's NEVI program, about $106 million through fiscal 2026 for corridor fast charging. EGLE's Charge Up Michigan grant was closed when we checked. The federal 30C credit does not apply to chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS, Instructions for Form 8911).

NEVI funds go to designated corridors such as I-96 and US-131, so a travel stop could fit while a hospital ramp would not. The IRS instructions give the 30C end date.

For apartments and hotels, the utility rebate is the incentive most likely to apply.

The budget

What does EV charger installation cost in Grand Rapids, and how long does it take?

By our estimate, eight Level 2 ports cost about $30,600 to $68,800 installed in Grand Rapids and two DC fast ports about $96,000 to $287,000, before rebates.

Parking ramps on the Medical Mile need long wiring runs between decks; surface lots spend more on trenching. Fast charging typically needs new Consumers Energy service.

Level 2 on an existing panel takes 8–16 weeks and fast charging on new service 26–52 weeks, by our estimate. We scale national per-port costs and AFDC's installation guidance by the Grand Rapids BEA index of 95.5; trenching fits the 4-month warm season.

A Wins Parking estimate, not a quote: Level 2 at $4,000–$9,000 installed per port (U.S. average), scaled by Grand Rapids's BEA cost index of 95.5. Trenching distance, panel and transformer upgrades and utility lead time move it most. The federal 30C credit cannot be claimed for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.

The day to day

How are Grand Rapids chargers run day to day?

On our parking platform: Wins sets prices, adds idle fees after a grace period, monitors ports at all hours, cites gas cars in EV spaces and reports charging next to parking.

In winter, cold batteries charge slowly, so we lengthen grace periods and keep cables off the ground where plows run. Our operations desk resets faults remotely or sends a technician. Reports cover energy, uptime, revenue and citations.
