EV Charger and Robotaxi Charging Installation in Huntington, WV

John Davis, Content Writer at Wins ParkingWritten by , Content WriterUpdated October 2026Reviewed by Ross D. Blankenship, Managing Principal.

Wins Parking designs, permits, installs and runs EV chargers and fleet charging depots for Huntington lots. The Department of Energy lists 12 public DC fast ports in the city but only 7 Level 2, so places to charge for hours are scarce. Appalachian Power serves Huntington, and no robotaxi operator has announced West Virginia.

The chargers

What EV chargers does Wins install for Huntington parking lots?

Level 2 at 2.9 to 19.2 kW, the Department of Energy's range, for parking that lasts hours or overnight, and DC fast up to 500 kW for fleets and quick stops.

With only 7 public Level 2 ports, Huntington's need is clear: chargers where people park for hours. Apartment and student-housing lots near Marshall, hospital staff parking, downtown offices and hotels all fit. Fast charging suits fleets and retail along I-64.

Equipment needs to handle snow and salt. We plan, permit, install and operate, and charging income shows up beside parking in one report.

The depot

What does a robotaxi charging depot in Huntington need?

High-power chargers sized to fleet mileage, an Appalachian Power capacity plan, off-street queuing, cleaning bays, rider pickup, gated access, cameras and winter snow removal. No operator had announced West Virginia service as of Oct 13, 2026.

Waymo's updates page lists Charlotte, about 238 miles away, among coming cities; that is the closest planned service we found and is regional context only. No company has named Huntington, and Wins has no robotaxi client.

A future depot would need a large, level site near I-64 with room for queuing and a covered cleaning area. Our autonomous vehicle parking page, the future-proof parking lot guide and the EV and AV deployment guide explain how an owner can plan for one.

The network

How many public EV charging ports does Huntington have?

7 Level 2 and 12 DC fast ports at 8 public stations with Huntington addresses, per Department of Energy data pulled Oct 13, 2026.

Huntington is one of the few cities we track with more fast ports than Level 2. Barboursville, just east, adds 12 Level 2 ports at its shopping area, and Ashland, Kentucky, across the river, had no public stations with an Ashland address in the data.

The count changes monthly; our EV charging ports database follows it from the same federal source.

The power

Which utility serves Huntington chargers, and what programs does it run?

Appalachian Power serves Huntington. Its business EV page offers a fleet assessment and introductions to vendors and charger installers; we did not find a business charger rebate.

The utility's TakeCharge West Virginia programs focus on efficiency, with Go Electric listed under home programs. For an apartment or office lot, we plan the budget without utility funding.

For larger installs, Appalachian Power checks transformer capacity, and we request that review early since it can set the schedule.

The code

Which permits and codes apply to EV charging stations in Huntington?

A city building permit for the electrical work under the 2020 National Electrical Code, including NEC Article 625, electricians licensed by the State Fire Marshal, a city contractor license and the U.S. Access Board's accessible charging guidance.

Outside the C-3 district, using required stalls for equipment can raise a zoning question with Planning and Zoning. Huntington publishes no electrical review time; we estimate three to six weeks.

The accessible charger is laid out first, with a level route, controls in seated reach and room for a wheelchair lift.

The incentives

Which EV charging incentives are open in West Virginia?

The federal NEVI program, in which West Virginia is a full participant, for fast charging along interstate corridors such as I-64. The federal 30C credit cannot be claimed for charging property placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS, Instructions for Form 8911).

NEVI funds corridor locations first, and only later may expand to other public sites. A typical apartment or office lot won't qualify. Under the IRS instructions, 30C is closed to new equipment.

For an apartment owner, chargers pay back mainly through session fees and residents who choose a building where they can charge.

The budget

What does an EV charger installation cost in Huntington, and how long does it take?

By Wins Parking's estimate, eight Level 2 ports cost about $28,300 to $63,600 installed in Huntington, and two DC fast ports about $88,000 to $265,000.

Huntington's BEA index of 88.4 is among the lowest in our Southeast pages, which keeps labor costs down. Older buildings with small electrical services and new utility service for fast chargers are the main variables.

Timeline, by our estimate: 8–16 weeks for Level 2 on an existing panel and 26–52 weeks for fast charging on new service, from national per-port costs and AFDC's installation guidance scaled to the metro. Surface work fits the 5-month warm season, which lines up with the summer break.

A Wins Parking estimate, not a quote: Level 2 at $4,000–$9,000 installed per port (U.S. average), scaled by Huntington's BEA cost index of 88.4. Trenching distance, panel and transformer upgrades and utility lead time move it most. The federal 30C credit cannot be claimed for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.

The day to day

How are Huntington chargers run day to day?

With the parking: Wins sets charging prices, adds idle fees after a car is full, watches every port day and night, enforces EV stalls with plate cameras and reports charging and parking revenue on one statement.

At a student apartment lot, residents charge overnight on their permit and idle fees free the ports by morning. In winter, snow is cleared around chargers. Faults reach our desk, and a technician resets or repairs the unit.

This is our EV charging parking management service, combined with parking management in Huntington when we run the whole lot.

The neighbors

How does Huntington compare with nearby cities for EV charging?

Huntington's 12 fast ports top Charleston's 9, while Charleston, about 44 miles east, has more Level 2 (27) and Barboursville 12, per AFDC data pulled Oct 13, 2026.

Across the river in Kentucky and Ohio, other utilities take over, and even within West Virginia territory can change, so we confirm the provider for each address.
