The chargers
Which EV chargers suit Chicago parking lots?
About 25% of Chicago's public ports are DC fast, 315 of 1,266 in AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026, yet Level 2 is still the first charger most garages, offices and apartment lots add.
High-rise garages in the Loop, Streeterville and the West Loop, and the medical campuses on the Near West Side, are Level 2 sites. Fast charging belongs where turnover is high: rideshare lots near O'Hare and Midway, and the distribution belt along I-55 and the Stevenson.
The Chicago EV charging station installation guide explains the service; this page adds the city data, ComEd's status, the transit parking rules and depot detail.
Courtyard buildings and two-flats rarely have garage outlets, so neighborhood lots and alley garages matter. Loop and River North garages, hospital decks in the Illinois Medical District and university lots are strong Level 2 sites.
The depot
What does a Chicago robotaxi charging depot need?
Waymo lists Chicago under "Up next" as of Oct 14, 2026; no driverless service carries Chicago riders yet.
Winter decides the design: O'Hare records 38.4 inches of snow a year, so depots need plowable layouts, indoor or covered staging where possible and chargers raised clear of snow piles. Add fast chargers sized to fleet miles, cleaning bays, a rider curb and secured entry.
Former industrial parcels on the Southwest and West Sides are the practical depot sites. Our guides cover autonomous vehicle parking, future-proof parking design and the EV and AV deployment guide. See also robotaxi depot design in Chicago.
The network
How many public EV chargers does Chicago have?
AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026 counts 353 public stations in Chicago with 951 Level 2 and 315 DC fast ports.
For a city of 2.7 million, the Level 2 count is low, roughly one port for every 2,900 residents. Most Chicagoans park on the street or in shared garages, so workplace and public charging carry more weight than in suburban metros.
Chicago's row in our ports-by-metro table shows the trend.
The power
Which utility serves Chicago chargers, and what does it offer?
ComEd serves Chicago, and its Make-Ready Rebate, which paid up to $5,000 per Level 2 port and $450 per kW of fast charging, is closed as of Oct 14, 2026.
Without the rebate, ComEd's role is the capacity review and the service connection. Older buildings in the Loop often have little spare capacity, so the review can redirect a project from the garage to the surface lot or the reverse.
We watch for a successor program and apply if one opens.
The code
Which permits and codes apply to EV chargers in Chicago?
The Department of Buildings issues the electrical permit, while NEC Article 625 governs charger circuits and the U.S. Access Board covers reach and aisle rules.
Buildings publishes no target for this work, so we budget 10–16 weeks, a Wins estimate. Near transit, projects may cut required parking within 2,640 feet of CTA rail or 1,320 feet of a busy bus line, which frees stalls for charging.
Chicago's own electrical code governs here, not a plain NEC adoption, so we draw to it. The accessible charger is placed first.
The incentives
What EV charging incentives are open to Chicago sites?
With ComEd's rebate closed, Illinois programs on the AFDC state page are the main option.
The IRS Instructions for Form 8911 close the federal 30C credit to chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026, so Chicago budgets now leave it out.
Chicago owners add charging mostly for tenant demand in apartments and offices.
The budget
What does EV charger installation cost in Chicago, and how long does it take?
In Chicago, twelve Level 2 ports run about $49,700 to $111,900 installed and four DC fast ports about $207,000 to $622,000, by our estimate.
Chicago's BEA index is 103.6, above the national average. We scale national per-port costs and AFDC's installation guidance to it; garage installs in conduit and winter work add cost.
Expect roughly 8–16 weeks for a Level 2 job on spare capacity and 26–52 for a fast-charging job with new service, after permits, by our estimate.
Per port, that is about $4,142 to $9,325 for Level 2 and $51,750 to $155,500 for fast charging at the BEA index, before ComEd's make-ready rebate, by our estimate.

A Wins Parking estimate, not a quote: Level 2 at $4,000–$9,000 installed per port (U.S. average), scaled by Chicago's BEA cost index of 103.6. Trenching distance, panel and transformer upgrades and utility lead time move it most. The federal 30C credit cannot be claimed for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.
The day to day
How are Chicago chargers run day to day?
Day to day, our platform prices each Chicago session, bills idle time after a grace period, monitors ports all night, tickets cars that block chargers and reports energy, uptime and revenue monthly.
Cold slows charging and road salt corrodes pedestals, so we choose cold-rated units and inspect after winter.
The Chicago parking management page covers gates and enforcement; EV charging parking management covers the charging side.
O'Hare's normals show a coldest-month low near 19°F and 38.4 inches of snow a year. We pick units rated for that cold, mount them above plow height and keep cords on retractors, and clear approaches and signs are part of every winter plan.
The neighbors
How does Chicago compare with nearby metros for EV charging?
Chicago has 315 fast ports; Milwaukee, about 86 miles north, has 33, per AFDC data pulled Oct 14, 2026.
Each neighbor has its own utility; Indianapolis's AES Indiana pays per-port rebates that ComEd no longer offers.
